What role does deliberate (Type II) cognition play in behavior?
The differences between automatic (Type I) and deliberate (Type II) cognition have long been debated in the academic literature, as have the roles each plays in shaping behavior. Currently, sociologists predominately endorse an "automaticity dominant" model in which most behavior is heavily shaped by automatic cognitive processes.
Our team introduced multinomial processing tree models to sociologists as a way of addressing questions about cognitive processing. So far, we have used them to demonstrate that people can employ deliberate cognition in a relatively fast and efficient way, meaning that deliberate processing likely plays a greater role in behavior than current models suggest.
