How do proscriptive and prescriptive morality differ?

The division between "shoulds" and "should nots" is fundamental to morality, but surprisingly little research examines this distinction directly.

Our research team explores how proscriptive (should not) and prescriptive (should) moral norms differ at a cognitive level, and in their influences on emotions and behavior. So far, it looks like proscriptive and prescriptive morality differ in many ways, with proscriptive moral norms being conceptualized in more concrete ways, and with greater negativity associated with moral violations (i.e., doing bad is seen as worse that failing to do good). This suggests that proscriptive morality will have priority in cognitive processing and in shaping behavior.
